Having some brains will help keep you safe, but fear is the mind-killer. (Yeah I just made a reference to Dune, sue me)
Personally I find that I perform MUCH worse when I'm scared of a rapid, and that loss of performance negates any enhancement of judgment.
In other words, if I'm scared, I run fewer rapids, but the rapids I do run, I run badly.
