1) When I got my first boat, I was concerned about the same thing. Ultimately, I jumped right into a playboat (Wavesport ZG) and made the adjustment quickly. I found that playing in the river's features was more fun than just running it. You may find that as you progress, you'll get tired of simply surfing a hole and want to try other things. A river runner can do some of the things that a playboat can but not as easily. Most people that I know who started out in a river runner ultimately moved into a playboat. Also, I found that my skills and confidence improved the most from playing in holes.
2) If you post a question that hasn't been asked before (or at least not in the recent past) then you reduce the risk of "flaming." Make sure you search the forums before posting a question and determine if your question has already been asked and answered. Think about your wording so that you are asking an intelligent question (not saying that you didn't - this is more for future posts) and not looking for an opinion that really comes down to personal preference.
3) As a newbie, I doubt that you would notice the differences between any two boats. You should always try out as many boats as possible and buy the one that you like. It doesn't matter who paddles what brand. I've seen paddlers do amazing things in all kinds of models and brands. How you control your boat is what's important. As you gain experience, you'll begin to recognize what you want out of a boat (most likely because the boat you have doesn't respond they way you would like).
People are always swapping boats when they are at a popular play spot. It's a great way to try out the latest and greatest.
Have fun on the water!
