First, I know both of these guys and I like both of them. I think alot of people are missing Mark's point....every local is game for additional releases but to take away an October release for 300cfs on fall fridays is absurd. As previously mentioned, the river naturally flows that much throughout the fall in alot of years.
Second, the Flannigan dam is a flood control dam....its mission is flood control....every action that it performs has to be consistent with flood control....a few people on boater talk "voting" for more releases will solve nothing.
If you want more releases...talk to AWA, volunteer for the AWA, get the AWA behind more releases...otherwise, as Mark says, don't fix it when it ain't broke. The problem is that even if Gene means well, by trying to fix something that's not broken, Gene very well could piss off some faction....who knows, Trout Unlimited may be totally against extra releases on a friday....or some other group for some other reason. When you start trying to change things you run the risk of changing them for the worse. I sort of suspect that none of this has been fully explored or thought out.....firing off messages on BT is pretty easy...maybe too easy.
Gene: If you want to save the Russell Fork, consider working with AWA to negotiate additional releases. One person or one small group cannot get more releases.....one person rubbing someone at the dam in the wrong way could potentially change things for the worse....food for thought.
Just my 2 cents.....Doug
