I do some similar things, but that first one seemed like a smart one that I haven't been doing. Carmichael really understands the body, that's based on reading a book and many articles by him. Yeah, he's known for cycling training, but I think the guy is probably in touch with many elite athletes in all sports.
Additionally, if you want more simple training exercises that don't require a gym membership, try Andria Baldovin's Yoga for Paddlers. Hint: it's not about meditation -- give it a try and you'll be surprised how solid it is for working the core.
