the water.  Boaters know that it's a pushing motion not a pulling action. He also didn't understand that the power for the forward stroke comes from the thighs, hips and lower back. However, the concept of cross training for boating is a valid one. Of course, I'm not an elite athlete but a 63 year-old keyboard jockey who wants to stay in good enough shape to paddle Class IV+ regularly (with an easy V every now and then). I've never tried to get in shape by paddling but have worked out so I'd be in good enough shape to paddle. To that end I spend a couple of hard hours 3 - 4 times a week plus paddling to stay in shape.
