Hey Jacob,
I hope California is great. So I really like my sherpa, but it's really hard to deal with unless you have 4ish feet of overhead clearance. But, you have to think you're carrying a boat that's about 8 feet long with 2 feet of needed room so that it doesn't hit your heals while walking. So needing 10ish vertical feet of clearance is acceptable. Make sure you tie knots in the straps at the buckles otherwise they slip a little which makes it feel like you're trying to carry a donkey that wants to jump off your back. But all in all I say it works remarkably well for the commercial kayak backpacks out there. Jerry rigging a system is also valid, but getting a waist belt along with that is difficult.

Best,
Rob Tompkins
