Basically, they were having the last possible canoe trip since the Sava river is dammed. The dam isn't ready, so there is water flowing between the pillars.
They ignored the "Stop! stop! shouts of the other participants and just paddled down about 6 ft into a hydrolic between two concrete pylons. The two boats flipped and everyone fell into the water. Many of the people were immediately sucked into a turbine shaft and only two managed to swim to shore, one of whom died later one in the hospital.
They made many mistakes that lead to this tragedy, but just looking at the clip will explain a lot of those mistakes.
