Frankly, I couldn't care less what someone else thinks about how I look in my paddling gear. I do this sport to have fun, and getting broken teeth, profusely bleeding wounds or even worse, broken bones in my face is not my idea of having fun.
Besides, I don't need so called paddling buddies who act macho or even ridicule my outfit. If someone has problems with what I'm wearing on the river, or he's trying to ridicule me for what I chose to wear, it's the last time I have invited him on a trip. There are plenty of good boaters that are good companions on the river, so why go paddle with a macho loser that cares more about appearances than about safety?
I've seen too many facial injuries on the river to even consider paddling without a face guard. It often takes experiences like described in the first post to make people realize how easy it is to hurt your face and how important good protection is.
