...than with anyone commenting on my helmet. Even more so, I'd probably be reacting the same if I didn't have a helmet with a face guard. It's one thing if a buddy makes a lighthearted joke about it, it's another to call people names or even call them gay because of their appearance.
Machismo, bullying and denigrating paddling buddies is disgusting and even dangerous behaviour that has no place in our sport. In my experience those calling someone else gay tend to be the ones most insecure with their own sexuality.
So sorry, but no, I don't see the fun of those kinds of remarks, and people using that term "was asking for it" are often those who are the bully. I've knocked the stuffing out of dozens of those when I was in primary and high school, and I would probably consider that option seriously if someone made a remark like that to my face. Alas, since I'm quite a bit bigger and more aggressive looking than average, most people don't dare to do that to my face, and so they pick on others that look more like a victim than me...
