Western rivers tend to cause more flush-drownings than Eastern rivers because the rivers in this part of the country are "younger" - i.e. the rapids are more continuous with fewer recovery pools. Considering that the East tends to have a much higher population than the West, and there's a lot more whitewater recreation in the Appalachians, the number of fatalities and the number of flush drownings in particular seems to indicate that the rivers in the West are deadlier.

I've heard that the Arkansas is one of the (by some sources *the*) most commercially rafter rivers in the US, so it's got both - the heavy usage combined with the Western character.

Depressing stuff. Remember to wear your PFD and always check your grab-loop.
