This sounds like what was described to me as "Western Style" or "Big Water Style" or "Side-Saddle" boating . . . keeping the boat more-or-less perpendicular to the flow, facing either shore rather than facing downstream. The (supposed) advantage is that you can accelerate (either forwards or backwards) quickly to maneuver around big holes. The idea is that (if your boat is pointed straight (or more straight) downstream, the tendency is to just accelerate INTO the feature, rather than AROUND it. It is a style which is much less prevalent on smaller, rockier rivers.
