First and foremost, you can check out AW for those states. And, rather than just pulling them up state by state (getting a straight alpha order listing), it may help a little to pull the states up 'by drainage', to get rivers organized somewhat more geographically. This will also pull in rivers in neighboring states which share drainages. Thus:
New Hampshire, by drainage
Vermont, by drainage
OR . . . a perhaps little recognized somewhat newer feature on AW . . . if you have a decently up-to-date home computer and high-speed internet connection . . .
If you have not already found it and loaded it to your computer, you can go to GoogleEarth, download their application (FREE!). IT'S WAYYYYY COOOOOL!!! (CAUTION: It's a potential big time-killer! You can explore the WORLD and the UNIVERSE!)
Once you have that on your computer, you can then go to the AW page for any state (NOT by drainage), scroll to the bottom of the state listing, and click the blue icon to the left of "xx State Rivers (KML)" (where 'xx' is the state abbreviation). Some people report being able to just 'open' the resulting file, but I have always had to "Save" to my harddrive, then start the GoogleEarth application, and then open the file(s). You will then see 'dots' locating all the reaches on the state map. You can repeat the process for each adjacent state (opening the listing in AW, scrolling down, saving the KML file, and opening in GoogleEarth) to see multiple states' whitewater rivers all at once, to be able to scroll seamlessly between states.
OR . . . I am loathe to mention the site, since he unapologetically did a wholesale ripoff of raw data from the American Whitewater website (want proof? All reach names and lat/lng coordinates match precisely!) . . . you can go to:
RiverFacts, Vermont
If you know what city you will be in (or nearest to), that sitepage has (at the bottom) links to pages with rivers organized by distance from major cities in the state. |
