That by talking a potential swimmer out of taking a swim in a potentially fatal place, he WAS helping him.
The situation was different (I assume, since I wasn't there) than that on the Chattooga, because the guy hadn't yet put in, versus being in the middle of a river canyon. I probably would never find myself in that position (running great falls solo) but if I did, I am sure that I would have done the same as kelldawg, versus saying "hell yeah man, fire that shit up" and watching carnage go down.
There is nothing wrong with having your own personal sense of judgement, and acting accordingly. And being safe isn't a bad thing either. I've always felt that a group is as strong as it's weakest member, and man if I'm running the class V VA lines I'm pretty sure I don't want a ticking bomb following me down.
Another thing. I'm not a class five boater, but there was a time when I wasn't really even a class three boater and I was pretty cavalier about whitewater. I benefited GREATLY by more experienced boaters giving me their opinion about my abilities. As it sounds like the old navy boater did from his experience with Kelldawg.
