A couple of years ago we drove over a mountain pass in Monte Negro over a "road" that was basically a goat trail over which a bulldozer with steel tracks had driven, turning it into a 15+ mile long washing board, which almost shook my fillings from my teeth. Good thing I stopped along the way to check if everything was still attached to the car, because the big bolts holding the towers to the roof rack had started to loosen. In the next village with a hardware store I bought those self locking nuts, and I haven't worried about them loosening ever since.
