My wife despises the smell of "gear funk."  My wet gear was banned to the back yard, and wasn't even allowed in the basement anymore.

Last year I started tossing all my gear (except helmet and PFD) into our front loading washer for a quick rinse of cold water after each river trip.  Not only does it eliminate the smell, but the spin is so fast the gear is close to dry when it comes out.  She doesn't complain anymore, either!

I would not use a top loading washer since I worry that the "spinny thing" in the middle could tear polypro/hydrosilk, as well as cause things like a skirt grab loop to get caught.
