And the Nanty shore ain't no Class III. Hail, I'd rather be a Potaohhhhhmac boater than a Nanny regular! WhenI lived 10 miles from Mather Gorge of the Potomac I drove 150 miles in the other direction, to the Yough, Tygart, Cheat, NB Potomac, and Stoneycreek rivers (and their creeks) every weekend.
I'm thinking Johnson City is near the Nolichucky, the French Broad (and its creeks), and White top Laurel, but not too far from the New and the Gauley headwaters, and not too far in other directions to Chatooga, Little, Tellico, and the Obed/Emory.
Maryville, on the other hand is very close to Obed/Emory, Little, Tellico, Ocoee, and Walden's Ridge, not too far from Pigeon, French Broad, and Nolichucky, but a bit of a hike up to West Virginia or down to Chatooga.
Fayetteville, it should go without saying, is near a host of Class III/III+ runs in the Elk basin, Gauley headwaters, and New gorge, and Morgantown has all the rivers and creeks of the Monongahela basin, two sections and many creeks of the North Branch of the Potomac, and two sections and several creeks of the Stonycreek River.
To me, a great paddling town would have a fair number of good streams within a three-hour radius. To me, paddling the Nanny every week would be purgatory and carrying out of the Upper Green every week would be hell. They'd both got real old real fast. But I guess that's just me. One-stop boating just ain't in my repertoire.
