Here's a bit of info based on my trip last year. First day we got to Whistler, the Cheakamus was running on the high-side of medium. Callaghan was about the same and Rogers was too high, according to Leland's source. If you look at a topo map, you'll see that Rogers isn't all that far from the North Fork of the Stein.
The next day, I called REO and they said the Stein was too high and it would be a couple weeks before they started rafting it. When setting shuttle for the Stein, my group I was meeting form Banff met a group of brits who'd just taken off. They reported high water, some swims, lots of portaging. We'd already put down the money on the plane so we went for it.
Not sure if we just got lucky, but we scored. We could see the water lines from the previous few nights on the beach. The water had dropped 1.5 feet in a few days and we had a perfect level.
After that, we spent a couple days on Callaghan (getting low by then), the Birkenhead, and then went over to Rogers which was at a prime level.
I don't know how much this helps, but my experience last year was that the Stein was prime when Rogers was just starting to come in. This probably makes sense due to the fact that the Stein gets the bulk of it's water from the North Fork.
For context, all of this went down the third week of August last year. Sounds like the season is getting going early. The Ashlu drainage will probably be where it's at when you get there. |
