	Doesn't hurt them. Just gets their attention. Proper timing and a good aim is all it takes.  Throw in a verbal command at impact and they'll obey next time without the BB.  Usually one lesson is all it takes.  I speak from experience.  My neighbor has five pinned up dogs that USED to bark all the time.
