i think most people are self taught; so don't worry about it. if you are certain you are ready, but your partner isn't find someone you trust to take you down that first IV trip. then you can help your friend make the jump next time. who you paddle with largely determines what kind of paddler you will be. if you feel the need to step it up, find someone willing to help you do that.
it might help if you tell everyone what you've paddled and what you are thinking about paddling. as there is a lot of gray area in between what is called III and IV. are you going from the pigeon to the ocoee? or the french broad to the cheoah? these are huge differences.
when i started kayaking, play boating really helped my skills. you might not think that it would help you prepare for class IV, but it helped my endurance, ferry, recovery, balance, and of course combat rolling ability. it also gets you used to being tossed around a bit. plus its a lot a fun.
