OK, the 'upper Midwest' may not have long, classic runs with awesome mountain scenery, or too many rivers which have a long runnable season, but there's plenty awesome whitewater to pick from, when it's running. Heck, Northern WI, the UP (upper peninsula Michigan), and the 'North Shore' (MN, from Duluth to the Canadian border, rivers dropping into Lake Superior) have drawn the attention of a good handful of 'pro' boaters and have been featured on some pretty significant 'feature videos'!
So, was your situation' such that you were just unable to have a boat along, or find the time to get out? (For two years!?!) Or doing the 'poor college student' thing, unable to scrape gas money for a few hours driving? Just curious. It just seems like such a shame that you didn't at least try to sample what the area has to offer. I know I wouldn't take a two-year sabbatical from whitewater without some serious reason, or without at least checking out any possibilities in the 'local scene'!
