Albeit there are amazing creek runs within 45 minutes (vallecito, lime, south mineral, etc) but there is great play 5 minutes away in town on the Animas (Smelter, Corner pocket, Santa Rita Hole, Big Kahuna Wave), then you can go to the San Juan Pagosa Springs run (1 hr away) that has a great play park, you can go to the Stampede section of the Dolores as well, which has two great play spots when the water is right.  Also, there are great river runs close by in the Piedra, Upper Animas, etc.  Durango offers up the best whitewater for a variety of boaters comparative to probably anywhere in the U.S.
