If you strike out in the lottery you may be able to pick up a cancellation permit when a lottery winner fails to send their money in 30 days before their launch date. It was relatively easy to do so this year. Great trip, perfect for kids, saw no mosquitos on the Lower San Juan in June two years ago. Canyon seems too dry and steep for them (no room for pools). You can arrange a shuttle and fill up on water at Valle's Trading post in Mexican Hat, but don't just walk up to a tap and start filling jugs; the owner is very touchy about that. He'll also charge you to fill your jugs.
