Clarkson University (located in Pottsdam, NY) is an excellent engineering school with a relatively small enrollment.  Proximity to whitewater?  The Stone Valley section of the Raquette is only 10 minutes from campus.  Stone Valley features scheduled whitewater releases in the summer and fall but also sees spills that provide runnable levels (200 cfs through 3000 cfs) during most of the fall and all of the spring.  Bring a creek boat.  Stone Valley is a legitimate class 4-5.

Other runs require a long drive.  Maybe 30 minutes or even as long as an hour.  But within that radius you'll find two class 4-5 runs on the Grass, three class 4-5 runs on the various branches of the Oswegatchie, class 3-4 play on the Black and class 2-3 play on the Saranac.

And if you don't mind enduring a real road trip...say two hours...there's the Beaver, Moose, Independence, Chategauy, Hudson, Cedar, Bog, Roaring Branch, Otter, Branch...and on and on.

The downside?  Well, Hell, everyone knows you won't get many days in during late December, January, February and early March.  But you do plan on completing a demanding major, right???
