feedback Thinking of building my own (small) trailer New

I have a Chevy HHR and can't find a roof rack that works.  Saris did make a nice one, but has stopped producing them.  So, I think I may just get a trailer hitch put on and try something different.  I have access to an old small jetski trailer I think I can convert.  I would have to totally refurbish it to make it road worthy.  The purpose would be to carry boats, bikes, and still have some storage space to throw wet gear, camping gear etc.  Any suggestions or thoughts are welcomed.  I have always transported gear on top of the car, so it's new ground for me.

Thanks,
