Jason,
I have an '08 HHR with the factory rails, and they are NOT positioned correctly.
They should be closer to the door edges where the frame is. I took it back to the
dealer and all they said is they will repair the rack after damage is made.
I did use my Thule with four boats loaded and drove seven hours roundtrip, and
it held up, but the roof sure flexes alot. So I did what you are planing on doing.

This site has alot of info on installing the hitch......google video has a nice how-to also.
I bought my stuff from these guys ....cheapest place ,and free shipping at the time.

I now have a 4'X8' utility trailer with 12" tires, and can take four paddlers that weigh 200+ and
six boats and all the gear, and still get close to 30 mpg........
Plus, I can use the trailer for moving other stuff I would have needed a truck for.
The roof rails are the only thing I didn't like about the car, the rest of the car makes up for it.
Also, Chevy says only the automatics are good to tow, the standard tranny can't take the abuse.....it's in your manual. Good Luck ! |
