Spend the last 4 days on the Gauley and with the decreased releases and NO natural streamflow it's been fantastic, but certainly a little different place.
Gauley Basics:
The water is 56 degrees - drytop suggested but a shorty and lots of pile and neo shorts will due if it's sunny. The run is LONG - bring snacks and plenty of water so you don't 'bonk' before hiking the hill. The air is damp - nothing will dry while you are here so bring backup fleece and socks. Count on Rain and some mud - because it almost always rains a little on the fest regardless of the weather predictions.
08 Difference:
You need to put on earlier to enjoy the best play, because it's already lower than usual so that 'first step' of water dropping is a big one. If you play Insig or Gomer's till you see a water-line, don't count on getting a good boof at Sweets. The right 'Energizer' boof line has been a great back-up.
Iron Ring - if you miss 2 'steps' of water you may want to scout Iron Ring, as it's pushing left much harder al lower water and a ride through the 'crack' is a real possibility - especially if you start too far right.
And overall there are far more little rocks showing but a good but less 'push' to the river over years past - probably due to no flow in the side streams. Still great play - Insig and Gomer's a bit more retentive in fact, still great rapids and the slots are less pushy but tighter. But once you lost water, count on sticking with the raft lines or keeping your eyes open for hazards that are normally under water to appear. A late-day 'low water' run is highly recommended - more creekish and much easier overall, but some new hazards to watch for.
Just a note to remember we've had several years of 'higher' water so keep your eyes open and the lines clean.
See you this weekend!
