I'm a PT and have rehabed hundreds of THAs.  You will have to be really careful for the first 3 mos because of certain precautions with THRs.  Listen well to your PT and surgeon.  Being and paddler and a PT, with proper rehab, no complications, and the blessing from your surgeon, I truly think you can most anything you want by 6-9 mos post op (remember, people golf with these things), but as I always tell my patients:  it does not matter how good of a PT I am or how motivated of a patient you are, there are certain rules of tissue healing and strengthening that no one can speed up, but there is alot you can do to slow them down, so don't try to go too fast.  Take into consideration having to carry your boat over difficult steep terrain and nasty swims which could pose the risk of dislocation. Thjerefore,  you may need to lean to the conservative side, but I really do not think you will need to give up boating.  You can still backpack with the same type of precautions but you may want to keep your terrain, distance and pack weight a little more conservative.

Hope that helps
