Bibs work under a dry top, just fine. I've had a few swims with that combination and done well. But a dry suit removes all doubt. If you can save up the extra doe.....A dry suit is the way to go. I have used a dry top with a "trout fisherman's" bib. I spent some time in one, doing a wet rescue on a canoe, in cold weather. After freeing the canoe, i was cold....Damn "wicking"...I have spent a lot of time in cold water with a dry suit too. The dry suit is the way to go.
I have also paddled with a plastic garbage bag as a splash top. It sucked, but it kept me from freezing to death. I tried to build a fire with 10 Marlboro ciggarettes but it didn't do anything but smoke...go figure, My hands were so cold that I coulrn't grab the paddke,,,so I pissed on my hands to warm them up. When I realized that I has just pissed on my hands, I stuck them in the ice cold river to wash them off. The only thing i COULD THINK OF TO DO WAS TO JUST BLAST TO TH E TAKE OUT. I was in the early stages of hypothermia when I got to my truck. I was paddling solo, on a day that was supposed to be sunny and warm and turned out windy and cold.
Get a dry suit with GORETEX written all over it...the first chance you get. |
