that is really the only smart option. I have two compressed vertebrae from fractures where I was slammed by a semi-truck. I foolishly creeked a lot after that and only have worse problems now. To save your back you must avoid loading large amounts of weight upon the spinal column. This means no vertical dropping and rock smashing. I nearly have removed creeking from my life and my back has been thanking me for it. I do enjoy pretty much every other thing in whitewater though, I still paddle the Gauley and can play hard one day but two in a row make life hard for the next few days. I occasionally creek but again I pay for it the days after. I am not a big believer in taking meds unless I am really hurting so that isnt an option for me.
Unfortunately the Gnar may be out of your future but there is no reason you cant just continue paddling your favorite runs that dont involve the murder of your back.
Oh yeah and streching very well really seems to help me with my recovery time from paddling.
