question Lower Gauley rapid ratings New

Did the LG from Koontz down thru Pure Screaming Hell this weekend for the first time. Level was 2800 cfs. It was quite a big larger than I expected and the biggest water I have been on, but I still had a blast. All of the sites I have seen seem to give different ratings for the rapids. Some sites give Koontz as a class III, while another gives it a rating of class V (none reference flow as a determining factor). Hell, even the AW page gives Koontz as a III on one page and a IV on another.

So, my question is, for Koontz to PSH, what are the rapid ratings (at least the major ones)?

Thanks,

Marc

note my take-Class III with 1 IV donutboy New
disagree Mash (both) & PSH are all standard rated class 4s tickamyer New
note Mash and PSH are class IV.   Gnar_Star New
question How does length of a rapid increase its difficulty? Wilko New
note Longer requires better endurance, longer concentration. <NT> cR@ViN_W@VeS New
smile I agree with that, but does it make it more difficult to control your boat through each part of a longer rapid? <NT> Wilko New
note If you loose your concentration or your energy, YES. Yall_Watch_This New
note But by cutting a longer rapid into short pieces, paddling from eddy to eddy... Wilko New
note Drop pool or continuous Cl-3...it's still class 3. Guelo New
note Is it harder to run an obstacle course after a short jog or a marathon? snowwrestler New
note Sure, and thanks for clearing that up: because that doesn't change the difficulty of the obstacle course. Wilko New
question Should the class rating reflect difficulty or danger? Flanman2 New
smile You voice exactly the biggest problems I have with that interpretation of the international WW difficulty scale. Wilko New
question So is supposed to be a difficulty scale or danger scale? Flanman2 New
feedback I'm leaning more towards the difficulty scale. Wilko New
disagree But ratings are for everyone, not just the experienced and expert. DangerJudy New
gack Once again trying to read something in my words that I didn't write, Judy? Wilko New
note So how is someone who cannot read water  supposed to be able to use the ratings DangerJudy New
feedback To get a basic impression about a river, like from reading a guidebook. Wilko New
note I do not agree.   Without the danger element added to the rating, DangerJudy New
note A class III boater should be able to look at the Woodall hole and tell it's a keeper timewarp New
smile Fine, so don't agree. I don't care what someone else rates a rapid, I'll look and judge for myself. Wilko New
note fine DangerJudy New
smile Let me get this straight, you honestly believe that the rating system is there to protect those who can't read water? Wilko New
note I can see both sides Flanman2 New
th_up Bingo <NT> snowwrestler New
note You make the mistake of thinking the rapid is being rated. But the rating system is for people snowwrestler New
smile I make the mistake? Wilko New
note One paddler's class 3 can be another paddler's class 4 and vice versa. analogkid70 New
disagree NO! NO! NO! BMan1 New
disagree If perception has no influence why are many previous Class 5's Class 3? <NT> duckypaddler New
note He's right, Mr. No. G New
note River rating is supposed to be about difficulty and not the skill of the paddler lrcable New
th_up Rating must be a unbiased grade of difficulty and consequences or people will get hurt/killed! shutterbug New
th_up Well said, Larry! <NT> Wilko New
feedback Ratings are supposed to provide a common language BMan1 New
question So you interpreted a rapid class IV last year, and this year a class III. What does that say? Wilko New
more my response G New
smile Actually, some of the people here would tell you that I'm more of a Weber kind of guy... Wilko New
disagree No, actually, you're wrong snowwrestler New
note Yeah, I see what you're saying.  It makes more sense than what I said. analogkid70 New
note Mash (both) and PSH are class IV. Kankles420 New
note By definition? So a rapid with consequences is automatically a class IV? Wilko New
