Personally I consider the Lower G at 2800 solid class 3.  I consider the upper at 2800 solid class 3 with five class 4s.  Two years ago I considered the Lower class 4 and the Upper scared the shit out of me.  Some folks consider the middle mile of the Narrows class 4.  I consider it full-on class 5.  It's all about one's perception based on  his/her experience.  With that being said, the Lower Gauley is a great low-stress, skill building river like the Middle Ocoee.
