when paddling the upper or lower gauley i always lean into the big waves when taking them from the side so they don't knock me off line and keep paddling. if you're working through a rapid to river left and taking a wave on the right (PSH) i dip my right shoulder, lean into it and give a left stroke. this should help keep you on you're line.
