I'm not familiar with the Upper Yough but I think Cheoah is much more difficult than Lower Gauley.  Of course, it all depends on what kind of boat you plan on paddling.  In a creek boat/river runner, you can avoid a lot of the holes but in a playboat, you had better be solid at driving your boat.  Cheoah is pretty continuous so swims can be long and bumpy.  There are tons of little holes and rocks just waiting to grab an edge and flip you or pin you when you get too comfortable.  There are several long, technical sections such as Land of Holes, West Prong Line, and Yard Sale.  Of course, these are in the last 2 miles but even still, the upper 5 miles isn't anything to dismiss just because not much is named there.  Just be sure to study AW's page on Cheoah and scout.
