but what if the boating community can fund the gauges for one year? that buys us time to help find longer-term funding. here's what i've been thinking about this morning (again, a multi-pronged approach to the problem):
1. lobbying. get the word out and encourage people to write emails and make phone calls.
2. short-term fundraising: raise $$$ for funding the two gauges for a year. the idea would be spread the cost over many individuals and a few boating organizations, that way no one person/organziation bears the full brunt of the cost. this buys us a year.
as an example of what i'm talking about, one possilbe way to break this down for, say, one gauge (just to simplify it)
boating organizations: 4,000
individuals: 3,000
in organizations, you break it down like this:
4 orgs to give $1,000: 4,000
in the individuals, you break it down even further:
10 individuals to give $100: 1,000
20 individuals to give $50: 1,000
100 individuals to $10: 1,000
3. long-term fundraising: help find long-term funders for the gauges. maybe grants? maybe sponsoring organizations?
one thing i'm not sure about is the legal aspect. can an individual raise this money or does it need to be coordinated/sponsored by a non-profit organization.
