They can tell you which climb is cool so you don't waste your time, but the problem is that ratings are subjective. The route may not have suited the authors style or he may have never climbed it and relied on ratings from locals he knows They commonly highly rate climbthey did, that fits thier style, was done by friens of theirs, is in an inconvienient location, etc. Once a guide book rates a climb low, that climb is avoided and never climbed even though it might be a perfectly acceptable route.
