I have some similar issues. Looking back at the times I have rushed my way through a roll attempt, I tend to fall into 2 categories...the times I just freaked for whatever reason, and the times when I truly didn't have much air.
It really just does depend on when you flip sometimes...I mean if you are paddling hard to pull something off, or the stress level is high, your heart rate is going to be higher, and you are going to burn through your available oxygen pretty quick. I guess if you blow your first attempt by lifting your head, you may as well get another shot of air while you are up there.
I'm trying to get myself to just tuck and chill for a second before I do anything after I flip. I'm finding that that helps a LOT to calm my mind and get thinking clearly about my situation. Rolling can be a really mental exercise once you have the muscle memory to roll successfully. I have blown several rolls in a row because I knew something scary was coming up downstream, and I rushed myself. |
