drive into Big Bend Road off hwy 107, drive to the end and park, find the trail down to Big Bend, get in the water and start wading downstream. You'll see some nice ledges, and soon you'll come to Big Bend Falls, one of the honorable portages on Section 1 of the Chattooga headwaters.
Wave to the trout fishermen. Keep wading downstream about 3 miles (I never measured), until you come to a series of big washboard ledges necking down into a tight exit. Could call that a falls too, but in Maine it might be a chute, or a shoot. Admire it from below, and then proceed to a definite falls downstream. This falls has been run..... It's really a big ledge.
Now backtrack upstream to the washboard ledges, go ashore, and scrounge around until you find a trail going upridge. That trail will soon intersect Big Bend Road, and you can turn left and get to your car.
Consider wearing something a bit warm because you may want to swim rather than wade at times. A PFD and even a helmet, plus a walking staff, can confer a measure of safety.
I have done Big Bend Road in a '90 Ford Escort, a '92 Mercury Sable, and in a '97 Subaru Outback. Traction was never a problem, but all three cars scraped a bit. Nice to have more ground clearance.
You can see pictures of what you would see on this section by going to my Gallery and looking for Big Bend Falls, the most obvious feature.
If you don't want to drive that far, wade and clamber up Holly Creek, or go down to the upper, upper Conasauga...... or work your way up the Jacks River from its intersection with the Conasauga.
