As others have said, don't mess with the gorge if you call yourself a III-IV boater, but the upper is a fun and very scenic III run.  There is quite a bit of good MTB trail in the park.  I rode there last weekend and will take my bike with me this weekend also.  Check with the "Visitors Center" to get a map of the trails.  There are several maps of the whole park on display, but you'll have to ask the employee on duty for a MTB trail map.  The trails are narrow, rocky and fun but don't have many lung-buster climbs (just what I'm looking for after a river trip).  As much as I love the paddling and MTB, the best part of October is just being at the Russell Fork.  There is no place on Earth like it.  I've paddled a lot of good rivers, lived all over the SE, and called some great rivers home.  BUT, the Russell Fork is my favorite place on this planet.  Spend a weekend there and find out why.  There is camping at the takeout ($12/night), but a lot of folks also camp at Carson Island in Elkhorn City (free).
Hope to see you there.
Steve

note Seems like a lot more than 4 miles to me.  I rode for about 1 hour and didn't ride everything last week... fishdoc New
note Park website says 10 miles of MTB trail, mtbr.com says 7+ fishdoc New
smile which reminds me of a Maze undercut story... russellfork New
note I've told that story more times than I can count.  Most recently in Aug. on a low water run... fishdoc New
