This is a common commercial length trip. No lay-overs, on the water early but hiking everyday-including one all day hike at either Thunder or Havasu. If you want to maximize hiking, go longer. If you want to lounge at camp, go longer. If you want to see the canyon in a two week vacation sized timeframe you are good to go. From Lava down there are relatively few places of interest or hikes (compared to the upper that is). It is perfectly do-able to get to Diamond two days after running Lava. You are on a high water cycle and the current moves along. Wind will kill you in here but in the winter you should be ok unless a storm is moving in. I have seen a lot (like MOST) privates get ahead of themselves thinking they can't make the miles down here and be sitting at mile 220 or so for a layover. The upper has TONS of great hikes do don't overlook that section in favor of the more popular ones down below Phantom. Have fun hilde |
