Re: question Russell Fork vs. Lower Meadow considering both difficulty and consequences, which one is tougher? <NT> PhineasJWhoopass New

4 years ago I lent a boat to Andrew Holcombe to paddle the lower meadow, and he brought it back to me after telling me that he and the boat went under a rock.

So for difficulty: I think that the Meadow is a bit harder (difficulty being judging the difficulty of staying on the line), but it is really not that much harder than the Russ. The Meadow definitely has some more difficult rapids than the Russell Fork (Double Undercut, and Comming Home Sweet Jesus).

For danger: The Russell Fork sees more rescues because more people paddle it. It's a great run with some really bad spots. The Lower Meadow generally sees the phrase "Well, it's not that undercut". And I would agree. I've been slightly under several rocks on the Meadow, but not on the Russell Fork. In fact, I would say that the Meadow is WAY MORE DANGEROUS. It still is a great run.

So the suggestion is that if you paddle the Russell Fork, make sure you are with people that you trust safety wise. And if you haven't paddled the Russell Fork get out and look at the rapids so that you know where the dangers are.

If you paddle the Lower Meadow, paddle it with someone who knows the run. It's a good run, but if it's your you should do it at lower water (<900) because the water moves slower into the hazards.

All in all the real bit of advice here is that you should make sure you are on the river with people that you trust and know can help out of a bad situation. Be careful out there and make sure that you have fun padding, that's all that really matters.
