Honestly, I think most of the "bridge" cameras out there are a better combination of sensor and glass than most entry level DSLRs.
The problem with DSLRs is the lenses. The cheap lenses are made with so many economic compromises that they're often a total waste. If you get a zoom lens for less than $400, you're probably getting a worse lens than you'd get on a bridge camera.
I've shot with a Pansonic FZ-10 and an FZ-50, and absolutely loved both of them. I still use the 50 when I don't want to lug my DSLR + 2 lenses around. The 50 fits in a Pelican 1150, has a gorgeous lens for the money, can shoot RAW, and has decent enough noise levels as long as you keep it at ISO 400 and below.
Unfortunately, Panasonic realized that the FZ line was cutting into their DSLR aspirations and discontinued them. You can probably still get them on Amazon though.
