Lived in Fort Collins and later in Woodland Park, CO.  Moved to Durham, NC and ultmately to ASHEVILLE.  Asheville is a great town and a good place to raise children.   It is a very friendly town with a great local culture, great restaurants, local shops, and excellent hiking and biking opportunities for east coast.   There is a ton to do around here with kids but I admit that there are things about Colorado that I miss.  You can boat year-round but Asheville is really optimum for either class II-III boaters or class V boaters (ie. Green Narrows) as there are year round consistent runs.   In between, it is good but there are no consistent class IVs (unless it is raining) and no good park&play like in Colorado.    When it rains, the creeks are great here.  If you are willing to drive 2-3 hours, there are a number of Class IV options but that can be hard when you have small kids.  That said, it is a much longer season.
