note Grand Canyon PFDs must be coastguard-approved? New

Can someone clarify the real, on-the-ground situation about PFDs and lifejackets for kayakers and rafters on a non-commercial Grand Canyon trip? My understanding is that rafters need to wear US-coastguard-approved gear and that kayakers can wear whatever they like.

I've heard that, at the discretion of the ranger doing the checking on the first day, rafters showing up with, say, European WW PFDs, will not be allowed use them. Is this for real?

Our plan is for rafters and kayakers to switch roles every other day, so everyone wants to bring their usual PFD. Unfortunately, most of them have Palm or HF or whaterever brands that are not US-coastguard-approved.

Jim.
