Did my 4th ever trip on moving water yesterday on the Cheat Narrows. This was my second time on this river... 1st was at about 1.8 ft and yesterday it must have been at about 5 or 6.
My biggest "Oh damn" working was paddling up to Calamity, looking for the tongue... Calamity was completely submerged and guess what, no tongue. I was too close at that point to take the "sneak" to the left so I had to hit it head on. Keep in mind, this is my 4th time on moving water and I'm buried in a 8+ ft hole. I made it out, started riding down the back side and made the great newbie mistake of sticking my paddle in.
Got flipped, missed my first (ever) attempt at a combat roll, punched out and got flushed right into another hole. Did some mystery moves sans boat and swam out.
Last biggie was getting flipped (on river right) 50 or so yards from the takeout and then swimming 1/4 mi or so to make it to the left bank. Joy.
