the soft palate is the fleshy thingy at the back of your mouth that separates your nose and sinuses from your mouth. When you breathe through your mouth only, you lift the soft palate to close off the sinuses from your airway. When you swallow food or drink, the soft palate closes off your nasal passages while the job is done.
It's possible to flood your sinuses without ill effect if you're not in polluted water- you just close your soft palate, hold your breath, and once you've rolled up, just explode the water out of your nasal passages and you're back in business.
This is an old swimmer's trick. The truth is that you've already got nose plugs- they're inside your nose, in the back, and you've got muscular control over when they're open and when they're not. It may feel wierd to let water into your nose, but once you get used to the sensation it's not a big deal at all. |
