Depends on a lot of things.
First off, how good is the paddle shop and what kinds of boaters does it attract? I know of two kinds of shops: the yuppy shop and the "other one." It can be a great way to meet other boaters if the shop customers and other employees fit your lifestyle.
Second, how good of a boater are you and how close is the shop to a good playspot? When I worked at a paddle shop, I wasn't very good. A group of us went A LOT right after work and I learned some valuable (and free) lessons and made some good friendships.
Third, how much equipment do you have? It's true that you get mad discounts, but this is bitter sweet. I bet I actually took home about $200 one summer. I'd buy AT paddles because "they were an incredible deal that I'd never get again." Depends on the person you are and your spending habits.
Just some things to think about. Remember, it's a lifestyle not a job. Unfortunately, as in most of the fun lifestyles, it doesn't pay anything. But that's okay if you don't mind or if it's a short term/summer thing. |
