depending on how you look at it. BN is a complex rapid and there are probably a hunert ways of running it. A lot of people run left after the chute and run what I call the single drop. If you run to the right , I call that the double drop. In between those two there are at least a half dozen other options for verying the bottom drops. It`s good to sit there and watch all the ways it can be run. If you don`t want to hike in and sit for a while you can sit in the rapid and watch the goings on(my favorite method). My favorite spot is the eddy right downstream of the rock in the middle. The easiest way to hit it is to slide down the rocks from the eddy right in front of and to the right of the rock at the top. Another way is to do the cheat to the left of the rock hugging it and swing into the eddy from the bottom. While sitting there , behind the rocks you just slid down , you can watch everything going on. I usually like to run first and get to the catbird`s seat and watch everyone else run , especially if several groups get there at the same time. Sunday I ran the left side of the chute thru the wave and spun into the eddy that way. After almost everyone else ran , I tried to hit the botton eddy on the right , failing to do that properly , I dropped into the bottom hole (yes Virginia , there is a hole there) providing entertainment for the rest of the group. The best place to watch moves in the top of the rapid , is the top eddy on the right. It would be best to get out of your boat if you`re going to watch for very long , since this is the staging eddy for most runs of the rapid , and it gets crowded pretty fast. This is the place on this river it took me the longest to understand. Probably because the first time I ran it I was bozoing my way down and subsequent runs was just trying to get thru as fast and unscathed as possiable. Plus there is really no convienent place to stop and scout , although some first timers I`ll take out about 50 to 100 yards upstream and hike down to scout. As I started hitting the eddys in the rapid and watching other boaters making moves , it became and still is one of my favorite rapids on the river. |
