Mercedes having a diesel is nothing new, they always have and always will, they are just getting around to releasing the diesel in the new E-class platform but it only came out a little over a year and a half ago, So to say that they are just coming out with a diesel is a half truth at best. (yeah I'm just being anal, oh well), Also the reason that many companies are coming out with more fuel efficient vehicles (like the A-class and B-class coming soon from Mercedes ) is to raise their fleet gas mileage to meet CAFE standards so that they can continue to make fuel inefficient vehicles. Mercedes cars get as bad of gas mileage as the H2 or the Tahoe or The Excursion. the S-class gets in the mid to low teens for city and highway and the E-Class gets in the mid to high teens, the CL600 or the SL600 or the SL55 or the S600 get in the low teens (I guess that's to be expected from a twin turbo V12, or supercharged V8). It is nice however to see them try to change the public's perception of them even if they really aren't doing anything that different.
