We're here not so much because of terrorism but to be sure we secure the world's energy supply.  The people in the Bush cabinet have wanted to invade Iraq since the early 90s.  There was a very good show on the PBS program "Frontline" about a consortium of politcos that started up a group called The Project for a New American Century (PNAC) - look 'em on the web.  As far back as early 90s, Wolfowitz, Cheney, and Rumsfeld were pushing the first George Bush to invade Iraq but he shot down the idea.  The men at PNAC new it would take "a Pearl Harbor type event" to justify the invasion of Irag and 9/11 provided that.  So, the idea of invading Iraq has been around before the war on terror and is less about stopping it than it is about securing energy for American interests.
