I too find myself playing not only tour guide but instructor as well, a role that I honestly enjoy 90% of the time. It feels good to share something you love with someone else and see the smiles in return.
It is important to remember, though, that in this role you are responsible for those you are with. In your case, the max number you felt you could SAFELY conduct down the Ocoee was two. Your trip, your decision.
This guys backlash at being left out is no surprise as he probably feels he can take care of himself and just wanted to join the party. This does not justify the slamfest he unleashed to your friends.
Don't let him suck you into the namecalling game though.
Give him a call and explain WHY you could not accomodate him, tell him your upset about the slander, and then step up and offer to take him out with his friend another time.
Being Ohio boaters, we need all the partners we can develop. If the guy is still an ass, cut ties knowing you went far and above to be the better mentor. Just my 2 cents.
